  • Contacting the instructor by email is strongly recommended. A polite email can help the instructor understand your situation, especially if the course is outside your department or you have a special academic reason for taking it.
  • If the request is unavailable because of academic restrictions or eligibility requirements, contact the course instructor directly for guidance.

Important Notes — Please Read Before You Apply

All D-2 visa holders have been required to enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI) since March 2021. Exchange and visiting students will be required to enroll in the National Health Insurance after completing their foreign resident registration.

Note that individual international insurance will still be required, as national health insurance will not be available until the RC(Residence Card) is issued. OIA can introduce insurance for international students from one of Korean insurance companies for the bridging period if you have not bought insurance yet. Detailed information such as application link and instruction will be shared during the orientation.

NHI Exemptions
Exemption is not automatic. Final eligibility is determined by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Contact NHIS before applying to confirm whether your case and documents qualify.

Who may apply?

CASE 1

Health coverage guaranteed by foreign law

  • France: eligible under the applicable foreign-law / agreement framework; no additional supporting document is generally required for this category.
  • Japan: Japanese Health Insurance Certificate.
  • U.S. / UN: limited to government officials, military personnel/retirees and their families; proof of the relevant status is required.
CASE 2

Health coverage guaranteed by foreign insurance

  • Ask NHIS first whether your current overseas insurance can substitute for NHI.
  • The policy must provide medical coverage in Korea comparable to NHI. Coverage amount and frequency should not be meaningfully limited; NHIS practical guidance may treat very high medical coverage (for example, KRW 1 billion or more) as effectively unlimited.
  • The overseas insurance must have been purchased before Foreign Resident Registration. For student exemption cases, confirm the exact timing requirement with NHIS before applying.
  • For female students, maternity-related medical coverage is required under the practical exemption guidance.
