Mandatory Enrollment

All D-2 visa holders are required to enroll in the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) after completing Foreign Resident Registration.
This regulation has been in effect since March 2021.

Before receiving your Residence Card (RC) : You are required to have international health insurance that covers your stay in Korea.
If you have not yet purchased insurance, the OIA can introduce you to a Korean insurance provider for the bridging period.

How to Pay Apply individually according to the instructions
  1. Monthly paper bill sent to the address on your RC
  2. Option to receive the bill via email or mobile (contact NHIS)
  3. Payment methods: auto bank transfer, wire transfer, or visit to the NHIS Foreign Resident Center

*Medical expenses are co-shared between the student and NHIS. No reimbursement process is needed for covered treatment.

Exemptions from NHI Enrollment

You may apply for exemption after Foreign Resident Registration by contacting NHIS directly via visit or email with the required documents.

Who can be exempted?

1) If your country guarantees health coverage under law

2) If you are covered by international private insurance

  • Must be purchased before entering Korea
  • Must have equal or better coverage than NHI
  • Maternity coverage is required for female students
