By Korean Immigration law, foreigners staying in Korea for more than 90 days MUST register at a local immigration office within 90 days from the date of entry. In other words, it is illegal to stay in Korea for more than 90 days without being registered, regardless of your visa type. Also, the D-2 visa is a single-entry visa, which is valid for only 90 days after arrival in Korea. Leaving Korea before registration will lead to the automatic cancellation of the D-2 visa status and registration application. (In such a case, the student will be required to apply for the D-2 visa and ARC again, which will incur extra expense for the application fee and fines.) Thus, do not plan to leave Korea before completing the alien registration and receiving the alien registration card.
