Health Insurance Information

From March 1, 2021, as the national health insurance policy of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of Korea is enforced, all international students (D-2 visa holders) must join the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI).

 

 

National Health Insurance Information

1. National Health Insurance Information
(1) Covered Period: 1 month from the time of signing up (to be paid monthly)
(2) Insurance Fee: 39,540 won (30% of monthly insurance premium applied to foreigners, refer to the National Health Insurance Bill for the detailed amount)
(3) Application Method:
- Bills are sent from the National Health Insurance Corporation to the address indicated on the alien registration card of the applicant
- The fee amount must be deposited to the account number stated on the bill you received (automatic transfer every month can be applied by phone call)
(4) Coverage Details:
- (Partial Payment) Only part of the hospitalization and outpatient medical expenses are paid, thus the personal charge is small
- (Health Check-up Benefits) Providing general and cancer check-up benefits
- (Ease of Use) No insurance claim procedure after treatment
- (Accessibility to Hospitals) Available to most clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, etc. established in Korea
※ Applicants only need to bear 20% of the hospitalization fee and 30~60% of the medical and outpatient expenses, and the rest shall be paid by the insurance company. The cut-down fee payment covered by the insurance company
※ Medical Expenses: Only medical expenses covered by health insurance shall be paid by the applicant
(5) Disadvantages of not Applying
- Problems of visa extension or disadvantages of permission to stay
- 연체금 최대 5% 납부 가능
- Limited health insurance benefit
- If the payment is not completed and still unpaid by the deadline, domestic income, property, etc. may be seized.
(6) Notice
- If you leave the country for more than one month during the vacation, insurance fees will be exempted. (In case of less than 1 month of departure, insurance premium must be paid)
- Students in the language program should contact their language department for insurance inquiries.
- Foreign students with Japanese nationality can apply for exclusion by calling the National Health Insurance Corporation if they have valid Japanese National Health Insurance.
- The expenses of students with F visas must be inquired of the National Health Insurance Corporation.

 

2. National Health Insurance Claiming Method
The national health insurance is applied to the payment costs, no claiming process is required.
